Thanks to a groundbreaking map — the first of its kind in the United States — community leaders and telecommunications companies in Georgia can now easily identify broadband dead zones down to a single address and expand access to those areas. Before the state could go about addressing the issue, it needed to know how big the problem was. Internet privilege: Poverty, geography deepens digital divide for Georgia school children

April 28, AM. The 4, members of Middle Georgia EMC will be the latest to benefit from a series of broadband projects cropping up across rural Georgia. The first customers will be connected as early as the first quarter of next year. The General Assembly passed legislation two years ago clarifying in state law that electric membership cooperatives EMCs are legally permitted to attach Internet fiber to their utility poles. Then last year, lawmakers approved a bill giving the state Public Service Commission PSC the task of deciding how much the EMCs could charge telecommunications providers for pole attachments. The state is also stepping up the investment of public dollars in rural broadband.

Since March and the early weeks of the COVID pandemic, Georgians have adapted to working online, socializing online and more recently, attending school online. For teachers and students grappling with the challenges presented by virtual learning — which is heavily reliant on streaming video — high speed internet has grown from a luxury to a necessity. One of those underserved areas, Jefferson County, started the school year with fully online classes. But some students have been coming to school anyway. Other students have resorted to using the public WiFi available in churches, parks and even restaurants.
